The Red Line
Environmental Storytelling, Serious Game
This project is based on the true incident of the "2005 Shanghai Maggie Lane Arson Case." Through systematic collection and organization of all related news reports, judicial documents, and social commentaries, the complete picture of the case has been reconstructed along a timeline.
The work focuses particularly on the intricate power dynamics among residents, developers, and the government, as well as the ambiguity of individual conscience under systemic oppression.
Employing "critical gaming narrative" as the core approach, the project allows players to assume the role of a "neutral agent" who joins a relocation team through connections. Under immense systemic pressure, the player must master persuasion techniques to convince residents to move out—until forced to confront a dangerous boundary: following orders to commit arson. The work aims to convey a clear critical stance: opposing the abuse of power.
